Banchory Wedding at The Barn Arts Centre and Venue

19th October 2024
It was one of those late October days that could go either way. There were little spits of rain on a cold wind followed immediately by long reaching shafts of low Winter sunshine with an unexpected glow of warmth.

As I got into the car to head out to Tor-Na_coille Hotel in Banchory though, I strongly suspected that rain would feature heavily in today's photos... Thankfully, I was wrong and the day took a turn for the better by the time I finished up photographing the bridal prep and headed off to the main venue, The Barn, Banchory. This was my first visit to the place as a photographer and it looked amazing, all dressed up in sunflowers, carnations, paper lanterns and sweeping strings of fairy lights. Just beautiful! I'll find out who dressed the place and amend this post when I get the chance.

On the way out there, passing along the winding back roads, a Radio 4 programme came on, dedicated to taking one song and then winding real life stories around that song. The interviewer spoke to people who associated the song with love, loss, ecstatic joy, pain and redemption. The song was "Tender" by Blur. One lady spoke of being rushed to hospital with her baby arriving nearly eight weeks early when the song came on the radio and made her feel like she was being watched over and looked after. A young guy spoke of feeling clear-headed for the first time in his alcohol recovery journey one morning as his flatmate stuck it on the turntable... You get the idea. It's not a song I've ever sought out or listened to deliberately but somehow I know it quite well and as the uncertain sun flashed through the watery windscreen, it felt like the perfect soundtrack for the coming wedding day.

Jac and Emma had clearly put in a lot of work to make their day wonderful. Emma's vintage style dress had been commissioned and hand-made to her specifications and Jac looked pretty dapper too! Couples spend huge amounts of time on the little details and I'm always happy to take some time away from the people to make sure that attention to detail is remembered. A really lovely bunch of guests made sure the day went swimmingly - no dead spots or post-eating slump - just an easy transition from one part of the day to the next. An emotional day for all but in the best possible way!
